The Internet has many tools to aid a genealogist in finding their family history. Today the internet is most useful for connecting with others who might have information on your family, sort of a collection of huge searchable bulletin boards. The Internet is also rapidly becoming a source for any other sort of information that can be typed or scanned. Look around, it is unpredictable what you might find.
These sites are very comprehensive. When looking for information on the internet, here is a good place to start.
The most time efficient, productive manner to use the internet for genealogy today is to post your surname and scan lists for others researching your surnames. There are several flavors of lists. There are large databases of surnames, researchers, and, hopefully, location and time frame. There is a newsgroup dedicated to surnames, but looking at this newsgroup daily is not time efficient - use the database on the web. You can also post surnames by region. Check out USGenWeb for places to post surnames and also look for regional mailing lists. There might even be a mailing list set up for your surname. Names can also be run through a search engine such as Alta Vista.
