Any trimmings from plants and trees from residential housing, will be removed at no cost. Brush should be set out on the alleyway, or terrace, if an alley is unavailable. You may use any clear 1.5 ml bag for your yardwaste, providing the bag does not hold more than 33 gallons. Free ABC Disposal yard waste bags will be available while supplies last. You must show your current sewer bill stub to receive the yardwaste bags. TREE SERVICE and LANDSCAPE CONTRACTOR'S WORK WILL NOT BE PICKED UP. We attempt to canvass the entire City bi-weekly for brush pick up, but may be delayed during busy summer months. Smaller clippings should be in yardwaste bags and set aside. Yardwaste consists of:
Yes
- leaves
- brush
- grass clippings
- Christmas trees
- garden debris
- small prunnings
No
- sod, soil
- flower pots
- fruit
- concrete
- fencing
The City of Kankakee also recycles their leaves, brush and trimmings the residents generate. The city has a grinding machine which turns thebrush and clippings into mulch. The mulch is given to residents at no charge with remaining mulch land applied to park district properties and local farmland. Residents requesting mulch may pick it up at the old Starlight Drive-in or call 933-0472 with any questions.
YARD WASTE BAGS may be obtained at the same locations as Free Green Bags. Any clear 30 ml plastic bag is also acceptable for yard waste only. Yard waste bags are collected separately on the same day as regular trash pick-up. DO NOT MIX brush with other discarded items.
In the Forestry division, the City of Kankakee has been a member of Tree City USA for the past 5 years. We also have on board a licensed arborist and a full time crew that works, weather permitting.
